Ganeshotsav 2015 - Mahesh Kale

We had the good fortune of listening to Mahesh Kale yesterday. Carolina Sanakritik Marathi Mandal (CSMM) organized the program.

Mahesh disciple of Jitendra Abhisheki, sang classical, devotional and natya sangeet. He is such a powerful singer.

Mahesh began with Shivaraj Balwant Yogi. It is a prayer to lord Shiva, Ganesh's dad. It was followed by the famous Vatapi Ganapati Bhajekam. Remembered rendering by Dr M Balamuralikrishna

He then sang a piece which looked like the base format for famous natya geet, Nath Ha Mazha. Mahesh explained that both were based on Raag Yaman. Apparently the famous song Devagharche Nyat Kunala from Matsagandha Natak is based on the same raag. Devagharche brought Pt. Abhisheki to the limelight as a music composer.

Man Lobhale Man Mohne and he surano chandra vha set the stage for a small tea/coffee break. Got to see what Kharja Swar (low pitched voice) sounds like while Mahesh was singing He Surano Chandra vha.
Post the coffee break, it was Tour the France of natya geet and bahajans. Song from Katyar Kaljat Ghusli, namely - Ghei Chand Makarand in both slow and fast rhythms were fun.

Bhajans - Janaki Nath Sahai Kare and Payoji Maine Ram Ratan set a devotional mood. Mahesh sang the famous Abhang - Haribhajana Vin written by Sant Sohiranath Ambiye

The program was concluded with the Bhairavi - Sarvatmaka Sarveshvara. Those were such a power filled two hours that it was no wonder that Mahesh got a standing ovation.

What impressed me was Mahesh's commentary before beginning a song. He was so jovial and Puneri cocky.

Mahesh was accompanied by Nitin Pathak on Tabla and Vikas Falnikar on Harmonium. Would like to thank CSMM for a memorable evening! It was fun.

Note - Mahesh looks pale in these photos due to a reason. He sang even after being in the hospital night before. One needs such energy to sing in this condition. Respect.
